May’s blooming marvellous with charity Art Exhibition

The Sir Joseph Banks Conservatory at the Lawn will host the art exhibition Meleager's Garland on the 30th and 31st May.

The opening party on Sunday 30th May from 6-9pm will be followed by a day of art, exploration and surprises on Bank Holiday Monday (31st) from 10am until 5pm. The exhibition will bring together artists from Lincolnshire and across the country to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

History, biology and ideas of place and environment are to be found in the art ‘specimens’ by acclaimed artists such as Andrew Bracey, Pamina Stewart and Claire Brewster. A visit to the magical treasure trail of artwork around the conservatory promises to be a thought provoking and delightful day out.

Anneka French, curator, said ‘The Joseph Banks Conservatory, named after the prestigious local botanist, will be host to artwork responding to the beautiful and somewhat unexpected space.

‘The exhibition aims to contribute to Lincoln’s blossoming contemporary art scene with this unusual group exhibition, while supporting the areas’ rich cultural heritage.’

Meleager's Garland will be free to enter. Visitors will be able to make donations to Cancer Research UK and a publication about the event will be available for a small contribution.

‘The exhibition will invigorate visitors after the long winter months with warmth, humour and creativity. This ethos of hope and restoration is echoed by the event supporting Cancer Research UK.

‘We hope that Meleager's Garland will inspire our audiences to seek out contemporary artists and to look with fresh eyes at their local landmarks.’ said Anneka.

The exhibition is called Meleager's Garland after the Greek poet Meleager who first assembled an ‘anthology’ of poetry, titled The Garland. The word ‘anthology’ was previously only used to describe collections of plants.

Curators Anneka French and Rebecca Wombell both studied Fine Art at the University of Lincoln and have since been involved with projects across the UK, including the Festival of Bathing Beauties, Tate Modern and the Lincoln Art Programme. Meleager's Garland is their first collaborative curatorial project.
